Deep
Creek boys dethroned at state indoor track meet, girls finish 3rd.

FAIRFAX - Deep Creek's
reign as boys state champs is over but several other South Hampton Road teams
fared well at the Group AAA state indoor meet Saturday at the George Mason
University Field House. The Hornets, who had won four straight indoor titles,
suffered several misfortunes, including a fall in the 800-meter relay that cost
them a chance for a fifth title. E.C. Glass took advantage of Deep Creek's
mistakes to score 33 points to win its first state indoor title.
Indian River, which has never finished among the top three, ended up tying for
second with Huguenot with 27 points. Bayside was fourth and Great Bridge was
fifth with 26 and 25 points, respectively "For years, Deep Creek has been a
dynasty and no one thought they could be touched," said Indian River sprinter
Thomas Speller, who placed fifth in the 300 meters. "But we showed they can be
touched." As expected, Bethel won its third straight Group AAA state indoor
girls title. The Bruins were led by Francena McCorory who won the 55, 300 and
500 meters. The three titles helped McCorory become the all-time winningest
female athlete in state indoor meet history with eight. The Bruins, who have won
five state indoor titles, finished with 48 points. Lake Braddock was second with
42 points and Deep Creek was third with 34-1/2 points. "We've never finished in
the running for a trophy," said Deep Creek coach David Waddell, whose best
finish before Saturday was fifth. "It was a total team effort." Toriano Moody
paced Indian River by scoring in three events. He finished runner-up in the long
jump, took fourth in the 55 meters and helped lead the Braves to a state title
in the 800 relay. Moody - along with Speller, Robert Allen and Garrard Quigley -
teamed to run 1:31.42. Another surprise was Bayside, which came within one point
of bringing home their first state trophy since it won the state title in 1987.
The Marlins were led by Charles Clark, who was questionable coming into the meet
because of a hamstring injury. But Clark showed no signs of an injury as he ran
6.41 to win the 55 meters for his first state title. "I'm thankful because I
wasn't expecting it," said Clark, who has finished state runner-up seven times .
"Because of my injury, I just wanted to see what I could do." Clark also
finished second in the 300 meters (34.61) and led the Marlins to a third-place
finish in the 800 relay. For the first time since 2000, Deep Creek's boys
returned home without a trophy. The Hornets had won four straight and placed
second or third in three of the previous four meets. But the girls team made
sure Deep Creek didn't return home empty-handed. The Hornets scored 17-1/2
points in the high jump on Friday which helped set the tone. Deep Creek also got
big points from senior Chantill Harvey, who placed third in the long jump and
fifth in the 55 hurdles. She also teamed with Aleathia Jenkins, Chantal Luedeke
and Myesha Barr to take third in the 800 relay. Granby's Chris Bell, a
three-time state outdoor champion, won his first indoor title with a time of
7.31 in the 55 hurdles .

STATE CHAMPIONS Eastern Regional Champions Deep
Creek boys 3-peat
FAIRFAX,
VA -- This year's VHSL Group AAA State
Indoor Track Meet was once again held at the George Mason Field house in Fairfax
as the state's best athletes and teams gathered for two days of exciting
competition. Over the course of the two day meet: three meet records were set,
three nation's best times were posted, and a state meet first was achieved by a
male individual. These achievements go without mentioning two exciting team
title battles waged.
Every
year, the same question is asked once track season rolls around. Can anyone top
the Deep Creek boys' track team? The answer is no for this indoor track season
as the Purple Hornets won their third consecutive indoor team state title. Deep
Creek with a team total of 59 points was able to hold off a tough challenge by
Westfield, who took runner-up honors with 52 points.
Senior
Joe Cezard was Deep Creek's sole event winner as Cezard took the state title
crown in the shot put with a strong toss of 57-6.75. Teammate Thomas McCutcheon
also picked up additional points in the event with a fifth place finish
(51-7.50).
The
4x200 meter relay team of Quentin Moore, Keshaun Jones, Steven Brickhouse, and
Brandon Custis placed second in the relay event with a time of 1:32.55 to pick
up eight additional points for Deep Creek. Also, Jones finished seventh in the
long jump (21-7.75) and Brickhouse took eight in the pole vault (13-6) to garner
Deep Creek a few more points.
Helping
Deep Creek defend their state title was the surprising second place finish by
Carlos Morales in the 55 meter hurdles with his 7.60 clocking. Morales was
seeded with the fifth fastest time coming, so his finish was clearly not
expected. John Hyman was Deep Creek's big point scorer as he took runner-up honors in the 300 meter dash (35.15) and 500 meter run (1:04.68). Hyman also anchored Deep Creek's 4x400 meter relay to a second place finish in the event (3:22.46). However, controversy surrounded Hyman's race in the 300 meter dash as a referee claimed Hyman stepped out of his lane. After a lengthy review which included a fiery argument with Coach Cox of Deep Creek and meet officials, Hyman was not disqualified.
