Aubrey H. Carey
CHESAPEAKE -- Aubrey Howard Carey, 61, went home to be
with the Lord July 5, 2007. Mr. Carey was born in Suffolk to the late
Aldridge and Lurline Dawson Carey. He was a veteran, having served in
the U.S. Army and, most recently worked as a union shop steward at
Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth. Mr. Carey was a member of New
Temple Grove Ministries for four years. Left to cherish his memory are
his loving wife of 35 years, Regina Carey; daughter, Alissa Coggeshall
and husband Alan of Suffolk; sons, Lee D. Carey and wife Angela of North
Carolina, Chris M. Carey of Chesapeake and Scott D. Carey and wife
Alicia of Cary, N.C.; brother, Aldridge W. Carey Jr. and wife Billie of
Chesapeake; and six grandchildren. The family will receive friends in
New Temple Grove Ministries, Military Highway, Chesapeake, from 7 to
8:30 p.m. Monday. A funeral will be held at the church at 11 a.m.
Tuesday. Burial will follow the service in the Albert G. Horton Jr.

OCEANSIDE, CA -- Gwendolyn G. Hoffmann, 72, died Oct. 24, 2007, after a long battle with breast cancer. She went home to be with the Lord, whose birthday she shared. Born in Deep Creek, Va., she lived in Oceanside, Calif., and was retired from her career with the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers Union’s, West Coast Office. She was preceded in death by her parents, F. Laurence and Sadie E. Carey formerly of Chesapeake and her husband, Ronald A. Hoffmann formerly of Escondido, Calif. She is survived by her brothers, John L. Carey of Fairfax, Va., and Ronald L. Carey of Chesapeake; her children, Valerie J. Daniels of Worcester, Mass., Mark A. Hoffmann of Grand Terrace, Calif., and Maureen L. Verduyn and her husband Kevin R. Verduyn of Carlsbad, Calif.; her grandchildren, Jason E. Daniels and Casey Moore of Vernon, Conn., Nathan J. Daniels of Vernon and Michelle M. Hoffmann of Laguna Hills, Calif.; and her great-granddaughter, Miya J. Daniels of Vernon. Private services for the family and high school classmates will be held Saturday at the Carey Family Cemetery located in Deep Creek, Va. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for donations to be made to breast cancer research.
James B. Carey Jr.
CHESAPEAKE - James Bond Carey Jr., 78, of the 3200 block of Galberry Road, went to be with his Lord April 1, 2008. A native of Deep Creek, he was the son of the late James B. and Grace W. Carey. Mr. Carey was a retired Coast Guard chief engineerman with 24 years service and was the recipient of the Bronze Star, Antarctica Service Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation and Authorized Coast Guard Cutterman Insignia. He later worked as a pier superintendent with Tarmac Inc. He was a charter member of Temple Baptist Church in Chesapeake, where he was a former deacon and music director. He was a Deep Creek High School football and track athlete. Left to cherish his memory are his wife and sweetheart of 57 years, Frances Billingsley Carey; three daughters, Karen Lindsay and husband Ronald, Sharon Noreau and husband Brian and Annette Polk and husband Benny; one sister, Jean Thompson and husband Ray; one brother, Kenneth Carey and wife Ica; seven grandchildren, Shannon, Joey, Danielle, Carey Beth, Eric, Jimmy and Evan and seven great-grandchildren. A funeral will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. in Temple Baptist Church by the Rev. Jerry Greco and Dr. Ray Thompson. Burial, with military honors, will be in the Carey family cemetery. Elizabeth Carey Walters
CHESAPEAKE -- Shirley Carey Walters, 71, of the
1700 block of Cedar Road, passed away Saturday, November 12, 2005 at her
residence. Born January 5, 1934 in the Deep Creek section of Chesapeake, she was the
daughter of the late Judson H. and Elizabeth Rowe Carey. In addition to
her parents she was predeceased by her beloved husband, Johnnie A.
Walters, Sr. She was an active member of Grassfield Baptist Church, the
Willing Workers Sunday School Class and the Women’s Missionary Union.
Mrs. Walters retired from the Chesapeake Public Schools after serving as
the Attendance Clerk at Deep Creek High School for more than 28 years.
She loved being with young people and challenged them to complete their
education. Survivors include her children, Karen W. Evans and husband
Brad, Johnnie A. Walters, Jr. and wife Cheryl, Sheree W. Best and
husband Stephen and Debbie W. Billips and husband Bobby. Her life was
immeasurably brightened by her grandchildren, Kyle, Kelli, Johnnie (“J.T.”),
Stephen and Christian, all of whom she loved dearly. Additionally she
was the “adopted Grandma” of Phillip, Alexandra and Madison as well as
many others. Other survivors include her mother-in-law, Josephine B.
Walters; brothers and sisters-in-law, Elmer and Linda Walters, Guy and
Kitty Walters and Gene and Jennifer Walters and many well loved nieces
and nephews. An only child she loved Catherine C. Stewart and Metta B.
Rich as “the sisters God gave her as an adult”. A celebration of her
life will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, November 16, 2005 in
the Great Bridge Chapel of Oman Funeral Home & Crematory, 653 Cedar
Road, Chesapeake. Rev. Norman March will officiate. Interment will
follow in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends
from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home. In lieu of
flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Shirley C. Walters
Attendance Scholarship Fund at any Towne Bank location or to the
Building Fund of Grassfield Baptist Church, 1772 Cedar Road, Chesapeake,
