Great Bridge notches 'monstrous win' over Deep Creek
CHESAPEAKE - It got tense near the end, but Great Bridge quarterback Casey Turner and his teammates hung on to celebrate their first victory over perennial Southeastern District power Deep Creek in 14 years Thursday night."It's a monstrous win for us," Turner said moments after passing for 268 yards and two touchdowns in the 14-6 victory at Deep Creek in the season opener for both teams. "It doesn't matter how close it got, it's the best moment of my high school career." Turner and company appeared headed for a blowout, running up a 14-0 lead in the first half. A senior quarterback who climbed to third on the all-time South Hampton Roads passing list with 5,396 yards, Turner riddled the Hornets secondary for 234 yards in the first half. His prime targets were Salem transfer Logan Heastie, who totaled five catches for 149 yards and a touchdown, and Austin Taylor, who had five receptions for 80 yards and the other score.
The hosts stiffened defensively in the second half and pulled to 14-6 on Calvin Wilson's 46-yard burst over right tackle for a touchdown with 7:12 remaining. "Deep Creek made some halftime adjustments and we went more to the running game to take time off the clock," Turner said. Chris Brewer's fumble recovery gave Deep Creek a first down at the Great Bridge 46 with 6:04 left. The Hornets turned the ball over on downs just less than three minutes later at the Great Bridge 30. Deep Creek got the ball back with two seconds left, but Fred Credle was sacked trying to pass as time expired. Turner said the Wildcats surprised Deep Creek early by running draw plays featuring himself and fullback Edmond Fitch."Our offensive line was amazing beating them five-on-five consistently to help the run set up the passing game," he said. "The defense was pretty amazing as well. "This feels so good after remembering all those times I watched Deep Creek pound Great Bridge when I was growing up." The crowd that filled the stands and concession lines of the 8,000-seat stadium cheered the Grizzlies’ (0-2, 0-2 Southeastern District) first touchdown when Tyler Clark scored on a 1-yard dive midway through the fourth quarter. Kelvin Demps’ 52-yard punt return set up the monumental touchdown. Devin Arrington had put Deep Creek (1-1, 1-1) up by six with a 10-yard run in the first quarter, but the Grizzlies blocked the extra point attempt. Wilson punched in a score from 3 yards out in the second quarter and Derek Hoyt added a 28-yard field goal to put the visitors up 16-0 by the end of the third quarter. Deep Creek 7 Western Branch 33
New date, same old Deep Creek-Western Branch rivalry
CHESAPEAKE - There are high school football rivalries, and then there's Deep Creek-Western Branch. For more than 25 years, this rivalry overshadowed others because Deep Creek and Western Branch met in the final regular-season game, usually with a Southeastern District title or a playoff berth on the line. That changes this season when the two teams meet tonight at Western Branch's Art Brandriff Stadium. The change came about with the addition of Grassfield, Chesapeake's new high school, which forced the football schedule in the Eastern Region to be shuffled. "It does seem strange to be playing this game this early," Western Branch coach Scott Johnson said. "I can't remember a time when the winner of this game didn't get a bid to the playoffs." You certainly aren't going to get a playoff berth after this game. All this game does now is get you ready for week 5." But it's still a big game for both teams. Western Branch, which has won four of the last five meetings, comes in 3-0 overall, 2-0 in the Southeastern District. The Bruins, ranked third in South Hampton Roads, want to get to 5-0 before their Oct. 5 showdown with top-ranked Oscar Smith. But first they must get past Deep Creek, which isn't as strong as it has been in recent years. Part of the problem is that the Hornets (2-1, 1-1) lost many players to Grassfield. "They lost like 20 kids, and when you take that many kids out of anybody's program - I don't care whose program you're talking about - it's going to have an effect," Johnson said. "(Deep Creek coach) David (Cox) has done a great job because any time you lose that many people and you're still 2-1, you've done a heck of a job." Cox knows the Hornets aren't as strong as past teams, but he says his team will be ready. "It's going to be a tough game," he said. "But we're going to show up Friday night and be ready to scrap. That's the only thing I can promise."

Bruins running back Brodie stands tall in rout of Hornets
CHESAPEAKE - Western Branch running back Hykeem Brodie is 5-foot-10 and 200 pounds.
To some Division-I football coaches, he may be considered too small. But don’t tell that to Bruins coach Scott Johnson, because he’ll laugh at you. “You can come to a game and watch him run, and you’ll see there aren’t many backs like him,” Johnson said. “I really don’t understand why more teams don’t want him.” Brodie was a beast Friday night. He rushed 23 times for 171 yards and two touchdowns to lead the third-ranked Bruins to a 33-7 victory against visiting Deep Creek. Of Brodie’s 23 carries, 19 were for five or more yards. Seven went for 10 or more yards. “We fell off in the beginning (offensively) but the line was doing their job the whole time,” said Brodie, a senior. “So I told them to keep doing what they were doing and I was going to follow.” Brodie would be good to his word; it would just take some time. As Brodie warmed up, Bruins quarterback Kevin Newsome got the offense going, throwing a 16-yard touchdown pass to Derek Black to give the Bruins a 6-0 lead in the first quarter. Deep Creek went up 7-6 in the second quarter, thanks to quarterback Fred Credle’s screen pass to Devin Arrington that went 35 yards to help set up Calvin Wilson’s 1-yard plunge. Western Branch (4-0, 3-0 ) didn’t waste any time regaining the lead.  Brodie, Newsome and Travis Paige led the Bruins on a 6-play, 74-yard drive, capped by Newsome’s 13-yard touchdown run.  The Bruins missed the two-point conversion but led 12-7 at the half. The second half would be all Brodie; he rushed for 112 yards and two touchdowns. “We thought we’d come out in the second half and try to stay with something we were really comfortable with,” Johnson said.  Newsome also helped out; he completed 5 of 8 passes for 104 yards and two touchdowns to pace the Bruins. Western Branch never looked back as it outscored Deep Creek 21-0 in the second half. The Hornets dropped to 2-2 overall and 1-2 in the district. Deep Creek 17 Kings Fork 27
Suffolk -
Dominique Patterson iced the win for host Bulldogs with a 52-yard return of an onside kick attempt for a touchdown with 18 seconds remaining. It was first win over the Hornets in King’s Fork’s (3-2, 2-2 Southeastern District) three-year history. Deep Creek (2-3, 1-3) had trimmed the lead to 20-17 following an 8-play, 77-yard drive capped by a 7-yard scoring strike from Fred Credle to Calvin Wilson with 23 seconds left. The Hornets then attempted an onside kick, but Patterson snagged the ball on his own 48 while a Deep Creek pursuer overran him.  Paterson ran untouched for the final score.  Deep Creek scored on its first two possessions to open a 10-0 first-quarter lead behind a Calvin Wilson 1-yard TD dive and a 24-yard field goal by Derek Hoyt. Patterson scored the first of the Bulldogs’ three unanswered touchdowns with a 52-yard TD run. He finished with 115 yards rushing on 15 carries. Key stats: KF—Patterson 15-115, TD rushing; Boone 8-72, TD rushing. DC—Credle 10-46 rushing; 8-15-0-105 passing. Deep Creek 14 Indian River 20
Deep Creek, Indian River on playoff cusp
CHESAPEAKE - Even though three games will be left on their respective schedules, tonight's Southeastern District clash between Deep Creek and Indian River will weigh heavily on both teams' postseason hopes. "Our kids know it's a big game," Deep Creek coach David Cox said. "Once you hit the four- or five-loss range, you're at risk" of missing the playoffs. The Hornets (3-3, 2-3) are led by quarterback Fred Credle, who has passed for 534 yards and three TDs, and rushed for 138 yards and a touchdown. Calvin Wilson has added 360 yards on the ground and five TDs. Times have gotten tough at Deep Creek, which made the playoffs seven consecutive seasons from 1998 through 2004. In '05, the Hornets finished second in the district but missed the playoffs on power ratings. Last year, they lost to Western Branch in the final week with a playoff spot up for grabs and also missed out."We lost just two games the past two seasons, and we sat home," Cox said. "Being that (the playoffs) expanded to eight teams, it gives the kids something to play for. If you have just three losses, you've got a got a great shot at getting in." Indian River (3-3, 3-2) also has three losses. "Making the playoffs has always been a goal, but some of our performances hadn't been what we needed," said Braves coach Cadillac Harris, whose team has rushed for 200-plus yards in its wins but has 43 total rushing yards in three losses. Dominick Bethea's 362 rushing yards lead the Braves. Harris said Dravon Poittilo, battling a wrist injury, and Reggie Garrett both should see time at QB. They have totaled 861 yards and six TDs. Indian River hasn't beaten Deep Creek since 2003, the last season the Braves made the playoffs. They eventually lost to Hopewell in the Group AAA Division 5 state semifinals. "We haven't played well consistently," Harris said, "... but we're not panicking." By DARRELL CUENCA, The Virginian-Pilot
Indian River remains in the playoff hunt vs. Deep Creek
CHESAPEAKE - With the defense withe ring late in the fourth quarter, Donald Smith snagged Deep Creek quarterback Fred Credle's pass and returned it to the Indian River 19 with less than two minutes left as the visiting Braves held on for a 20-14 victory in Friday's Southeastern District tilt at Nathan T. Hardee Stadium. Indian River (4-3, 4-2) kept its Division 5 playoff hopes alive and ended Deep Creek's chances. Devin Arrington "has been their playmaker, and I knew he was going to take me to the ball," Smith said. "I read the quarterback on the bootleg and knew I had to follow him." Smith's interception snuffed a 13-play drive by the Hornets (3-4, 2-4) that started at the Indian River 47 with less than nine minutes remaining. "We got a little tired in the fourth quarter," Braves coach Cadillac Harris said. "But we had some opportunities and didn't fold. When you face adversity, it shows what kind of character you have." Deep Creek had trimmed its deficit to 20-14 early in the fourth quarter after a 5-yard Delvin Judge TD run. The Hornets then forced an Indian River punt four plays later. Quarterback Reggie Garrett accounted for all three of Indian River's touchdowns.  He opened the scoring on a 1-yard dive less than three minutes into the first quarter.  After the Hornets leveled the score on a Calvin Wilson 3-yard burst five minutes later, Garrett tossed an 18-yard fade to the right corner of the end zone that Van Jones caught midway through the second quarter. The Braves' Deandre White returned the opening kickoff of the second half to his 47, and Garrett connected with Antonio Brown on a 53-yard scoring strike down the middle on the next play. "We had seen the safeties playing close on the bootleg," Garrett said. "I put (the ball) up there and I knew (Brown) would be wide open." Key stats: IR-Dominick Bethea 17-121 rushing; Garrett 6-10-1-98, 2 TDs passing; 5-13, TD rushing. DC-Kadeem Young 17-62 rushing; Wilson 16-50, TD rushing; Credle 9-18-2-107 passing.By DARRELL CUENCA, The Virginian-Pilot
