Great Bridge breaks away from Deep Creek in second half
CHESAPEAKE--A Deep Creek offense that doesn’t run the wing-T? A Great Bridge offense that doesn’t have Casey Turner at quarterback? This could take some getting used to. On a night when Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama was touting change, the Hornets and Wildcats followed right along in the Southeastern District football opener for both teams. Ninth-ranked Great Bridge, guided by new quarterback Brad Hudson, scored 27 second-half points on its way to a 34-12 victory over the new-look Hornets on Thursday night at Colon L. Hall Stadium. Hudson, a sophomore, shook off a jittery first half and finished with 142 passing yards and 84 rushing yards in his varsity debut at quarterback. He ran for a touchdown and passed for another in the Wildcats’ first game since 2003 without Turner, who graduated after last season as South Hampton Roads’ all-time leading passer. “I just had to get the nerves out of me,” said Hudson, who was 3 for 9 with two interceptions before halftime. “I was a little nervous at the beginning.” While Great Bridge showed off a new quarterback, Deep Creek unveiled a new offense under first-year coach David Waddell. For decades, the Hornets employed a run-oriented wing-T offense. But on Thursday the team trotted out for its first possession and lined up in an I-formation. Tailback Charles Arnold capped that first drive with a 78-yard touchdown run and finished with 138 yards on 19 carries. Arnold, though, missed the fourth quarter with an ankle injury and the Hornets managed just 18 total second-half yards before a last-gasp touchdown in the fourth quarter. “We had to control the ball,” Waddell said. “We knew we wanted to keep the ball out of their hands. They’re an explosive offense. They can do some things with mismatches and formations that can give you trouble.” Hudson and the Wildcats did just that after halftime. The quarterback ran for 70 yards and completed 9 of 15 passes for 117 yards in the second half. “A team like Deep Creek is going to run the ball and take a lot of time off the clock,” said Wildcats receiver Logan Heastie, who caught three passes for 53 yards after halftime. “You have to take advantage of every possession you have. The first half we didn’t take advantage of anything.”   By Jami Frankenberry ~ The Virginian-Pilot © August 28, 2008

Grassfield 14, Deep Creek 7
CHESAPEAKE Grassfield overcame five first-half turnovers to come from behind and beat the host Hornets. Deep Creek (0-2, 0-2) scored first when Josh Bell scored on a 49-yard touchdown pass from Kameron Stewart in the first quarter. The Grizzlies (2-0, 2-0) answered on quarterback Terrell Johnson’s 1-yard touchdown run. After two scoreless quarters, Grassfield took the lead for good in the fourth quarter thanks to a 26-yard punt by Deep Creek. The Grizzlies marched 46 yards capped by running back Tucker Spruill’s 2-yard touchdown run. Key stats: G — Bruce Smith 16-116 rushing, Terrell Johnson 15-53, TD rushing; DC — Charles Thigpen 10-73 rushing. #10 Norcom 26, Deep Creek 0
PORTSMOUTH - A smothering defense triggered the undefeated Greyhounds (3-0) at home to their first victory over Deep Creek (0-3) in 11 years. Norcom intercepted five passes, taking two back for TDs, and forced nine Hornet fumbles. Sophomore cornerback Carlos Mills had three interceptions, carrying one back 55 yards for a TD and set up another score. Norcom quarterback Deandre Lamb threw his ninth TD pass of the season, a seven-yarder to Demarcus Hoggard. The Greyhounds had two TDs nullified by penalties, one a 63-yard pass from Lamb to Rashawn Finney. Key stats: Deep Creek, Charles Thigpen 16-53 rushing; Norcom, Anthony Blount14-87, 1 TD rushing, Lamb 7-19 152 and 1 TD. He said it:  “Mills got burned once last week. I think he was hungry and showed why he was an all-district cornerback as a freshmen last year,” Larry Archie, Norcom coach. — Reported by Bill Leffler
