Rudee Inlet waves flip boat; 1 man dead,
another injured

VIRGINIA BEACH — One Chesapeake man died and another
suffered hypothermia after their small boat flipped in the rough waters of Rudee
Inlet on Saturday morning.
Brian Ricardo , a police spokesman, said emergency dispatchers received the
first call about the accident just after 11 a.m.
Police, fire department and emergency medical service personnel arrived
within a few minutes and pulled one man from the water and recovered another
from the rocks that line the narrow inlet.
Despite “extensive resuscitation” efforts by police officers and EMS
personnel, which continued on the way to and at the hospital, Donnie R. Breeden
, 49, was pronounced dead, Ricardo said.
The other man, identified as Brian D. Kunkle , 39, of the 4100 block of 3rd
St., in Chesapeake was taken to Virginia Beach General Hospital, where he was
treated for mild hypothermia and later released.
A witness, David Trax , told WVEC-TV that the boat the men were on was no match
for the rough conditions.
The two men were in a 16-foot, aluminum bass boat, Ricardo said.
“The guy was just heading out of the inlet and they got through where one
of the breakers were and they stopped the boat,” Trax said.
A wave “overtook them and flipped them over,” he said.
Kunkle climbed onto and stayed with the overturned boat. He was rescued after
it drifted to the south jetty.
But Breeden “was out there by himself” in the cold water, Trax said.
“I ran over there by the rocks,” Trax said. “There really wasn’t
anything we could do. And I observed him go under.”
It was unclear if Breeden was injured in the accident when the craft
overturned or if he suffered extreme hypothermia from the frigid waters.
Water temperatures along the coast were in the mid-30s on Saturday.
His body was sent to the State Medical Examiners office in Norfolk to
determine the cause of his death.
The Virginia Beach Police Marine Patrol is investigating the incident.
